Maidstone Buddhist Cultural Centre
The Maidstone Temple is an empathetic response to both the site and the history of existing structures. Conceptually, the set of three buildings play on the core notions of enlightenment from Buddhist culture.
The cultural centre; inclusive of a cafe, stage and sputa, located at the top of the valley is nestled in the trees and surrounding landscape. Designed to symbolise the journey to enlightenment, the stupa stems from the ground through rammed earth walls and grows lighter with timber construction where a sky garden becomes the base for the lightweight pinnacle structure.
Manipulation and introduction of light to such an enclosed and dark space needs to be sympathetic and respectful towards the ambiance and emotions of the space. Thin highlight windows and a central light – well lighten up each floor without compromising the sense of “detachment” and “sacredness”.
With a sustainable goal in mind, the structure utilises materiality that reflects the regenerative history of the site
